Born in 1958 at Upsala College, which gave it its letters ("FM Upsala"), WFMU bought its licence in 1995 and has been independent ever since. It takes neither ads nor sponsorship: its listeners fund it, through a yearly pledge marathon and its record fair. No set playlist, every DJ makes their own programme, from forgotten rock to the most unclassifiable music.
